Hotel Real

Built in 1917, Hotel Real occupies a Belle Époque palace on the Magdalena Peninsula promontory, its neoclassical facade overlooking both the Bay of Santander and the adjacent El Sardinero beach district. Paseo Pérez Galdós runs directly below the grounds, placing the hotel roughly 200 metres from Primera Playa de El Sardinero and around 2.5 km west of the city's ferry terminal and central commercial area. The building served as a summer retreat for King Alfonso XIII, and its grand entrance staircase, columned terraces and period proportions have changed little since. The setting on the headland means sea views are available from the front of the property on three compass points.

Rooms are divided into Classic, Superior, Junior Suite and Grand Suite categories. Classic and Superior options are finished in warm period-influenced tones with quality bedding and en-suite bathrooms; Grand Suites on the upper floors add private sea-facing balconies with unobstructed panoramas across the bay. The outdoor pool sits within landscaped gardens shielded from the prevailing Atlantic winds, and the full-service spa offers massages, facials, a thermal circuit and treatment rooms bookable in half-day blocks. A fitness centre with bay views is open daily.

The hotel's main restaurant serves refined Cantabrian cuisine — Cantabrian anchovies, suckling lamb, Liébana cheeses and seasonal Atlantic fish — in a formal sea-facing dining room; a terrace bar handles lighter lunches and sundowners in summer. Room service operates around the clock. The concierge team arranges cable-car excursions to Fuente Dé, guided visits to Altamira, boat trips on the bay and logistics for the Camino de Santiago stages passing through Santander.
