Playa de Valle Gran Rey

Playa de Valle Gran Rey occupies the lower end of the Valle Gran Rey, the most dramatic of La Gomera's deep ravines, where the island's terraced hillsides descend between towering basalt cliffs to a dark volcanic sand beach at sea level. The beach stretches for approximately 800 metres in a roughly linear arrangement and is subdivided into several named sections — Playa del Inglés, La Calera, and Vueltas — each with slightly different character, separated by rock outcrops and small headlands. The dark sand is coarse-grained and firm underfoot, typical of La Gomera's coastline, and the water is a deep vivid blue that contrasts strikingly with the black sand and rust-red cliffs above. Wave conditions are moderate and the sea is generally safe for swimming in the main beach sections; a lifeguard presence operates in summer. The Valle Gran Rey community has retained a countercultural character that dates from the 1970s, when German and northern European travellers discovered the valley as an escape from mainstream tourism development elsewhere in the Canary Islands. The result is a beach settlement with natural food shops, yoga retreats, small independent guesthouses, and restaurants serving vegetarian and fresh fish cuisine alongside craft beer and local Gomeran wine. The fishing harbour at Vueltas, a short walk from the main beach, is the departure point for whale and dolphin watching excursions. Pilot whales are resident year-round in the channel between La Gomera and Tenerife, and the probability of sightings is consistently high. Bottlenose dolphins and common dolphins also frequent the area. Regular ferry services connect Valle Gran Rey directly to Los Cristianos in Tenerife and to San Sebastián de La Gomera. Access within La Gomera is via the winding GM-1 and GM-2 roads from the capital San Sebastián.
