Playa de Los Cristianos

Playa de Los Cristianos sits at the heart of the Los Cristianos resort in the south of Tenerife, sheltered within a natural bay formed by the headland shared with the Las Américas resort to its north. The beach is approximately 600 metres long and is characterised by dark brownish volcanic sand, giving it a distinctly Canarian identity that contrasts with the imported golden sand found at Las Teresitas. The water is notably calm — sheltered from the prevailing north-easterly trade winds by the headland and partly by the adjacent harbour walls — making it one of the warmest and most tranquil swimming spots in southern Tenerife. The water depth increases gently from the shore, which makes the beach particularly well-suited to families with young children, elderly visitors, and anyone who prefers sheltered, low-wave conditions. The beach is compact but well-organised, with a clearly defined sunbed zone, a children's play area, and a waterfront promenade. The old port area and ferry terminal for boats to La Gomera and La Palma sit immediately adjacent, creating a pleasant mix of tourist and local character. The fishing harbour, which still operates alongside the commercial ferry quay, adds authenticity to an otherwise holiday-focused setting. A range of restaurants and cafés lines the seafront and the streets immediately behind the beach, spanning traditional Canarian tapas to international cuisine. Lifeguards operate from raised towers during peak hours and a flag system is consistently applied. The beach holds a Blue Flag rating and water quality is excellent. Whale and dolphin watching excursions — including sightings of resident pilot whales in the Tenerife channel — depart daily from the adjacent port, making Los Cristianos a convenient base for marine wildlife enthusiasts.
