Monte Urgull is the wooded hill that rises directly above the Parte Vieja, the old town of San Sebastian (Donostia) in Gipuzkoa, in Spain's Basque Country. The loop is about 3 km and gains roughly 130 m to a summit of about 135 m, which places it firmly in the easy category for first-time walkers. No permit is needed and the park is open to the public.

Access is on foot: the main entrance is at the Paseo Nuevo on the seaward side of the old town, and a second entrance lies near the Plaza de Zuloaga, each within about five minutes of Plaza de la Constitucion. No parking is needed because the old town is best reached on foot or by Dbus city bus, and street parking in the centre is scarce. The surface is a mix of paved lanes, cobbled ramps and stone steps, with some short steep sections, and almost the whole route is shaded by holm oak and other trees, which keeps it cool in summer. Exposure is minimal, although low walls overlook drops on the seaward side. Along the way, the walk passes old defensive batteries and cannon emplacements facing the Cantabrian Sea, the former Casa de la Polvora (powder house), and the English cemetery tucked into the hillside. The Castillo de la Mota crowns the summit and is the main landmark, with the large Sacred Heart statue (Sagrado Corazon) just above it. From the ramparts, views take in La Concha bay, Santa Clara island, Monte Igueldo opposite and the rooftops of the old town. A natural turn-around is the castle itself, after which the descent can follow a different path to the other entrance for a loop. The harbour and the museum area at the foot of the hill offer cafes and shelter. There are no refuge huts and no reliable water sources on the hill, so visitors bring water from the old town. Benches are placed at several viewpoints. Paths can be slippery after rain because of moss and polished stone, so shoes with grip are advisable. Because the hill sits in the middle of the city, the walk is easily combined with a visit to the old town's pintxo bars before or after.

Tips for visiting

  • Carry water from the old town; the hill has no reliable fountains or shops.
  • Wear shoes with grip, as moss and worn stone become slippery after rain.
  • Go at sunset or early morning for softer light and fewer visitors at the castle.
  • Enter by the Paseo Nuevo and descend by the Plaza de Zuloaga side for an easy loop.
  • If rain sets in, descend by the nearest path; every route leads back to the old town within minutes.

When to visit

Spring and autumn offer the clearest views and mild temperatures. Early morning or the hour before sunset avoids the busiest midday crowds in summer.

Accessibility

The paths include stepped sections and steep cobbled ramps, so the full loop is not suitable for wheelchairs and is difficult with strollers. Some paved lower stretches near the entrances are gentler, but mobility-impaired visitors should expect gradients.
