Parador de Hondarribia

The Parador de Hondarribia occupies the Castillo de Carlos V, a medieval fortress at Plaza de Armas 14 within the walled old town of Hondarribia, Gipuzkoa, in the Basque Country of northern Spain. The castle's origins date to the 10th century and it was substantially reinforced during the reign of Emperor Charles V in the 16th century — the parador's name honours that imperial association. For centuries the fortress commanded the mouth of the Bidasoa estuary, which divides Spain from France; today it retains its stone towers, crenellated battlements, and imposing arched entrance while sheltering 36 elegantly appointed rooms within its ancient walls.

Rooms are set in the restored interior of the fortress and individually furnished to combine medieval atmosphere — vaulted ceilings, stone walls, antique furniture — with modern comforts including contemporary bathrooms, heating, and Wi-Fi. Many rooms have windows looking out across the estuary to the French town of Hendaye and the Pyrenean foothills beyond. The most coveted rooms face north towards the estuary; the internal courtyard rooms offer a quieter, intimately historic atmosphere.

The parador restaurant serves traditional Basque and Navarrese cuisine highlighting locally sourced seafood and seasonal produce. The terrace is one of the most atmospheric dining settings in the Basque Country, surrounded by stone walls and affording views over the red-roofed old town and the estuary. Breakfast is a generous spread, typically included in parador rates, served in the historic dining room. The bar serves local txakoli white wine and pintxos in keeping with the Basque tradition.

Hondarribia's medieval old town surrounds the castle on all sides, with cobbled streets, colourful Basque-style houses, and a lively pintxos scene. The beach, the fishing harbour, and ferry connections to the French village of Hendaye are all within 15 minutes' walk. San Sebastián is 20 kilometres to the west.
