A 61-metre-high iron transporter bridge over the Nervion estuary, still operating.
The Vizcaya Bridge, known in Spanish as the Puente Colgante, spans the mouth of the Nervion estuary between Portugalete and Las Arenas in Getxo, Biscay, Spain. It was built in 1893 by the architect Alberto de Palacio, a disciple of Gustave Eiffel's school of iron engineering, and is recognised as the world's first transporter bridge in service. The design solved a practical problem of the age: the estuary needed to be crossed without obstructing the tall-masted ships that served the industrial port of Bilbao. A high iron span carries a suspended gondola that moves across the water at roughly deck level, so ships can pass underneath. The bridge is 61 metres high and about 160 metres long. The structure is made of wrought iron lattice, with twin towers and a horizontal girder from which cables hang. It was damaged during the Spanish Civil War in 1937, when the span was destroyed, and it was rebuilt and reopened in 1941. Modernisation has since replaced the gondola mechanism and brought the system up to current safety standards. UNESCO inscribed the bridge as a World Heritage Site in 2006, citing its place as an outstanding example of industrial-era engineering and the earliest transporter bridge. The gondola still carries pedestrians, bicycles and cars, running all day and night. Visitors can cross by gondola for a small fee, or climb to the high walkway, reached by lift, to look down on the estuary and the surrounding neighbourhoods. A visitor centre and displays explain the history. The approach to a visit is experiential: crossing the river on a 19th-century machine is the principal attraction. The bridge is reachable from Bilbao by Metro Line 1 to Areeta or Portugalete. The ironwork is regularly maintained and repainted, and the structure remains in excellent condition and in daily use.
