Mundaka

Mundaka is a small and beautiful fishing village at the mouth of the Oka River estuary in Bizkaia, sitting at the threshold of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. The village is known throughout the surfing world as the site of one of Europe's — and arguably the world's — finest left-hand barrel waves, produced when Atlantic swell meets the sandbar at the estuary mouth in a specific alignment that generates a long, hollow, perfectly shaped tube wave. This wave has hosted stages of world professional surfing championships and attracts experienced surfers from across the globe.

Beyond its surfing fame, Mundaka is a genuinely charming Basque village with a well-preserved historic centre, a working fishing harbour, and a strong maritime culture. The 16th-century Church of Santa María de Mundaka sits above the village on a promontory, and the Ermita de San Pedro chapel occupies the tip of the peninsula. The harbour is lined with traditional fishing vessels and the jetty provides an excellent viewpoint across the estuary to the bird-rich marshlands of the biosphere reserve on the opposite bank.

The Mundaka wave is not reliable year-round — the sandbar shifts and the best conditions occur when a strong Atlantic swell aligns with the correct tide and wind direction, typically in autumn and winter (October to March). In summer the wave is often small or flat, but the village, its cafés, restaurants, and the estuary scenery are rewarding in any season.

The EuskoTren narrow-gauge railway connects Mundaka to Bilbao Atxuri station in approximately one hour through scenic coastal and valley scenery, making it an easy and enjoyable day trip from the city.
