La Concha Beach

La Concha is consistently ranked among the finest urban beaches in Europe — a perfect crescent of golden sand stretching almost 1.4 kilometres around a sheltered bay in the heart of San Sebastián in the Basque Country. The bay is enclosed by the wooded hills of Monte Urgull to the east and Monte Igueldo to the west, with the uninhabited island of Santa Clara sitting at its centre, creating a natural amphitheatre that shelters the beach from Atlantic swell and provides exceptionally calm, shallow water ideal for swimming and family use.

The elegant Paseo de La Concha promenade runs the full length of the beach, lined with ornate iron railings, Belle Époque lamp posts, and the grand Miramar Palace — once a Spanish royal summer residence — perched on a headland at the western end. The promenade's café terraces and the historic La Perla thalassotherapy spa are symbols of the city's long association with fashionable seaside leisure dating to the late 19th century.

The beach fills rapidly on summer weekends, particularly from noon onwards. The eastern end near the Parte Vieja is busiest; the western section beyond Miramar known as Ondarreta is noticeably quieter. Santa Clara island is accessible by seasonal boat service and has its own small beach for those seeking privacy. Sand chairs and sun loungers are available for hire throughout summer, and kayaks, pedalos, and paddleboards can be rented near the water's edge. Lifeguards patrol from June to September.

Morning walkers and runners claim the promenade from dawn, the beach fills through mid-morning, and the pintxos-before-sunset crowd fills the terraces from early evening. Photographers find the early morning light on the arc of the bay particularly rewarding, with the city reflected in the glassy water.
