Bar Esperanza, Sóller

Bar Esperanza is the most celebrated breakfast café in the mountain town of Sóller on Mallorca's northwestern coast, occupying a corner of the Plaça de la Constitució — the town's central square, dominated by its Modernista church facade and the terminus of the vintage wooden tram that connects Sóller to Port de Sóller below. The café has been a fixture on the square for decades and is closely associated with Sóller's most distinctive produce: the local orange. The Sóller valley is renowned across Mallorca for its orange and lemon groves, and the café's freshly squeezed juice, made from orchard fruit picked nearby, is genuinely different in sweetness and depth from anything produced with supermarket citrus. The breakfast offering is straightforward in the Spanish tradition: strong coffee (café amb llet, cortado, or espresso), freshly squeezed juice, and toast with a choice of toppings including sobrassada with honey, butter and jam, or tomato and olive oil. Home-baked pastries and the occasional local ensaïmada round out the morning menu. The terrace on the square is the most coveted position, looking out toward the church and the tram tracks. The atmosphere is lively in the morning and calms toward midday. Bar Esperanza closes at 2PM and has no evening service.
