Mahón Harbor & Gin Distillery, Menorca

The natural harbor of Mahón (Maó) is one of the defining geographical features of Menorca, a drowned river valley stretching 6 kilometers inland from the sea at widths up to 900 meters, widely regarded as the finest natural harbor in the western Mediterranean after Valletta in Malta. The harbor's strategic value brought waves of conquerors — the Romans founded the settlement of Mago, the Moors built defenses, and notably the British seized Menorca in 1708 and held it, with interruptions, until 1802. The British period left a distinctive architectural legacy visible in the Georgian-style windows, sash frames, and country houses (ventas) around the harbor and in Mahón itself. The harbor waterfront (Moll de Ponent) contains the Xoriguer Distillery, which has produced Menorca's distinctive gin since the 18th century using a recipe developed to satisfy British naval appetites. The distillery occupies a historic stone waterfront building and remains one of the last copper-pot gin distilleries in Spain. Visitors can observe the distilling equipment, learn the history, and taste multiple products including the famous gin amb llimona (gin with lemon), pomada (gin with lemonade, Menorca's signature cocktail), and various herbal liqueurs — all included in the free entry. The harbor quay has excellent fish restaurants with terrace seating, a fish market, and boat excursions that explore the harbor mouth fortifications. The yellow-painted military hospital island of Sant Felip visible from the quay reflects the island's British garrison past.
