Ciudatella Historic Center, Menorca

Ciutadella de Menorca (historically Ciudatella) is one of the most complete and beautiful small historic cities in Spain, a former island capital whose entire old town survives in remarkable condition as a largely car-free ensemble of baroque palaces, Gothic churches, and narrow limestone-paved streets. Founded as a Moorish settlement and transformed following the Christian reconquest of 1287, Ciutadella served as Menorca's capital and bishopric for centuries until the British transferred capital status to Mahón in the early 18th century for its superior harbor. This historical slight sharpened civic pride, and Ciutadella's residents — the ciutadellencs — have maintained an intensely strong local identity and the fiercely traditional Festa de Sant Joan, held in late June, when local riders on black Friesian horses navigate rearing crowds in a remarkable spectacle rooted in medieval equestrian tradition. The architectural centerpiece is the Plaça des Born, enclosed by the Ajuntament (Town Hall), neo-Gothic Palau Torresaura, and baroque Palau Salort, with an obelisk commemorating resistance to a Turkish raid in 1558. The walled Gothic cathedral from the 14th century overlooks the harbor. The harbor itself, a dramatic narrow inlet surrounded by restaurant terraces carved into the limestone cliff, is magical at sunset when boats rock in the pink light. The covered Mercat Municipal in the old town is one of Menorca's finest food markets, with stalls selling sobrassada, artisan cheeses, and fresh fish in a beautiful 19th-century cast-iron hall.
