Babylonstoren

Babylonstoren occupies one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms in the Winelands, on the Klapmuts-Simondium road near Franschhoek, about a 45-minute drive from Cape Town and ten minutes from central Franschhoek. The farm dates to the 1690s, and the estate has restored its original whitewashed Cape Dutch farm buildings while adding a working eight-acre fruit and vegetable garden that shapes both the food served and the daily activities on offer. Guests stay in converted farm cottages and rooms spread across the 200-hectare property, simply furnished with local textiles and farm-style furniture rather than conventional luxury-hotel decor. There are two restaurants — Babel, serving farm-to-table dishes built around whatever the garden has ready that day, and Werf, a more casual all-day spot — plus a bakery and a wine cellar producing the estate's own label, with tastings available. The spa uses ingredients grown on the farm, and there are two pools, one set among the garden's fruit trees. Activities include guided garden walks, cycling around the estate, cooking classes, and vineyard tours, making Babylonstoren better suited to travellers who want an active, food-focused Winelands stay than to those seeking a conventional resort. The estate is large enough to feel private even when busy, and cottages are spread far enough apart across the farm that guests rarely encounter other visitors between meals.
