Discover the most beautiful beaches and coastal experiences in Western Cape.
Western Cape is South Africa's most visited province, home to the iconic Table Mountain, world-renowned Cape Winelands, the spectacular Garden Route, and the vibrant city of Cape Town. It offers a unique Mediterranean climate, diverse landscapes ranging from dramatic coastlines to semi-desert Karoo, and a rich cultural tapestry blending Cape Malay, Khoikhoi, Dutch, and British heritage.
Top 10 Beaches
The best beaches Western Cape has to offer.
Camps Bay Beach
Cape Town's most famous beach stretches along the Atlantic Seaboard with the dramatic Twelve Apostles mountain range as a backdrop and a palm-lined promenade bordered by Cape Town's best beach bars and restaurants. The water is cold (Atlantic, 14-20°C) but the setting is spectacular. Sunset here is unmissable.
Clifton 4th Beach
Sheltered by massive granite boulders and accessible via steep stairs from Victoria Road, Clifton 4th Beach is arguably Cape Town's most beautiful beach. The fine white sand, turquoise water, and shelter from the Cape Doctor wind make it the most popular of the four Clifton beaches. There are no facilities - bring everything you need.
Clifton 1st Beach
The northernmost of the four Clifton beaches is traditionally the most LGBTQ+-friendly and has a lively, inclusive social atmosphere. Sheltered by the same granite boulders as its siblings, it offers calm waters and beautiful scenery.
Muizenberg Beach
South Africa's most famous surf beach and the birthplace of surfing in Africa, Muizenberg is instantly recognisable by its row of brightly painted Victorian bathing boxes. The long, gentle beach break makes it ideal for beginner surfers, and the warmer False Bay water (Indian Ocean, 18-22°C) makes swimming more comfortable than Atlantic beaches.
Boulders Beach
Famous for its resident colony of over 2,000 African penguins, Boulders Beach is one of South Africa's most extraordinary wildlife experiences. The sheltered cove with warm False Bay water makes it excellent for swimming, and the penguins can be observed at very close range from the boardwalks.
Long Beach, Kommetjie
One of the Cape Peninsula's longest and most beautiful beaches, Long Beach at Kommetjie is a wild, windswept stretch of white sand popular with experienced surfers for its powerful Atlantic swells. At low tide, the beach stretches seemingly forever. The surrounding Kommetjie wetlands are excellent for birdwatching.
Hout Bay Beach
A long arc of sand curving around the working fishing harbour of Hout Bay, flanked by dramatic mountains. The beach is quieter than the main Cape Town beaches and has a relaxed, village atmosphere. The nearby harbour offers seal island boat trips and excellent fresh fish at Mariner's Wharf.
Hermanus New Harbour Beach
The beach at Hermanus is secondary to the whale watching - the main attraction here is the dramatic cliff path that offers some of the world's best land-based whale watching from June to November. Southern Right Whales breach, play, and nurse their calves in Walker Bay right below the cliffs.
Wilderness Beach
The beach at Wilderness is blessed with the most beautiful setting on the Garden Route - a wide sweeping bay where the Touw River meets the Indian Ocean, flanked by indigenous forest-covered hills. The Wilderness National Park protects the estuary and its birdlife. Warm Indian Ocean water makes swimming very comfortable.
Plettenberg Bay Main Beach
Plett's long, beautiful beach curves around the bay with views of the Robberg Peninsula and regular dolphin and whale sightings. The warm Indian Ocean water and sheltered position make it one of the Garden Route's finest swimming beaches. The beachside cafes and restaurants make it easy to spend a whole day here.
