A steep scramble with exposed sections and a short chain-assisted step; stay on the marked route and do not attempt in wet or windy conditions.
India Venster is one of the classic scrambling routes up the front face of Table Mountain, above Cape Town in South Africa's Western Cape. It begins on Tafelberg Road near the Lower Cableway Station, where visitors arrive by Uber, Bolt or taxi and park in the cableway car park if driving. From there a contour path leads west to the signed start of the route. No permit is required within Table Mountain National Park. The ascent is about 2.5 km and climbs roughly 600 m, starting near 400 m and finishing close to 1,000 m on the plateau edge. It is more demanding than the neighbouring Platteklip Gorge because it involves steep, exposed scrambling on sandstone ledges rather than a staircase. A short section is assisted by a chain, and several steps require hands and careful foot placement. Surfaces are rock and a little loose gravel, and there is almost no shade, so sun and wind exposure are significant. Landmarks include the first buttress climbs above the contour path, a traverse beneath the cliffs and the final gully that leads to the plateau near the upper cableway station. Most hikers take two and a half to three and a half hours to go up. The usual descent is by the Table Mountain Cableway or by walking down Platteklip Gorge, since descending India Venster itself is harder than climbing it. There are no water sources on the route, so water must be carried. Shelter is limited to the cafe and toilets at the upper cableway station. The reasonable turn-around point is the base of the first scrambles if the rock is wet, the wind is up or cloud is forming, as the exposure becomes serious higher up.

When to visit
October to March in dry, calm weather, ideally starting in the early morning before the heat and the cableway queues build.
Accessibility
The route involves steep scrambling, chains and uneven rock, so it is not accessible by wheelchair or stroller. The cableway is the step-free way to reach the plateau.
