The Sea Point Promenade is a roughly 3 km seafront path that runs along the Atlantic coast of Sea Point, a suburb a few minutes west of central Cape Town in South Africa's Western Cape. The wide, paved walkway stretches from Mouille Point near the Green Point lighthouse to Sea Point Pavilion and beyond, with a lawned strip on one side and the rocky shoreline on the other. It is one of the city's most popular public spaces, used by runners, walkers, cyclists, dog walkers, families and fishermen at all hours. Along the route are public swimming pools, including the Sea Point Pavilion pool, outdoor gyms, playgrounds, benches and kiosks selling coffee and ice cream. The promenade offers constant views of the sea, with Robben Island visible on a clear day, and the mountains of Lion's Head and Signal Hill behind. Sculptures and public art are dotted along the route, and the lawns host picnics and informal sports. A walk of the full length takes about one to one and a half hours, with more time for stops. Sunrise and sunset are the best times, with joggers and walkers out early and crowds gathering at dusk to watch the sun set over the ocean. The best photo angles are of the sea and waves breaking on the rocks, and of Lion's Head glowing in the late afternoon. The area is busy and generally safe in daylight and early evening, but visitors should take normal city precautions, keep valuables out of sight and avoid isolated stretches late at night. Wind can be strong in summer, so a light jacket helps, and waves sometimes splash onto the path in storms. The promenade is free and open at all times.
