Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia, set at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. Known for the Kalemegdan Fortress, the bohemian Skadarlija quarter, the Temple of Saint Sava and a lively splavovi (river barge) nightlife, it blends Ottoman, Habsburg and Yugoslav layers into one of the Balkans' most energetic cities.
Belgrade has a continental climate on the edge of humid subtropical, with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and often dry (July and August highs near 29-31 C, with heat waves above 35 C), winters are cold with frost and some snow (January averages about 1 C), and spring and autumn are mild and pleasant. Annual rainfall is moderate, about 650-700 mm, with the wettest months in late spring and early summer. The kosava, a cold, dry, gusty south-easterly wind, blows down the Danube in autumn, winter and spring, usually for a few days at a time. Figures below are long-term averages and vary by year.
