A 19th-century garden with a greenhouse in the middle of Vračar
Jevremovac Botanical Garden is a quiet green pocket at Takovska 43 in the Vračar municipality of Belgrade, Serbia, easily missed by visitors who stay on the main sightseeing routes. Established in 1874 by the botanist Josif Pančić and owned by the University of Belgrade, it combines a teaching collection with a public garden. Shaded paths lead past ponds, rock gardens and mature trees from different continents, and a historic glasshouse holds palms, cacti, orchids and other tropical plants. A Japanese garden corner is at its best in spring, when blossoms open, and early autumn brings changing leaf colour and reflections in the ponds. Plants carry Latin labels, which suits students and keen gardeners. The garden is open daily from about 9:00 to 18:00 from April to October, with shorter hours in winter, and entry costs about 200 to 300 RSD for adults and about 100 RSD for children. A visit takes about an hour, and the garden is 12 minutes on foot from Republic Square along Takovska. Good photographs include the glasshouse exterior, the ponds in morning light and the blossom paths. Crowds are very light throughout the year, with students and neighbourhood walkers the main visitors, so weekday mornings are especially calm. Visitors should keep to paths and avoid picking plants. In winter the outdoor sections are dormant, but the glasshouse is a warm, green refuge.
