Great War Island (Veliko Ratno Ostrvo)

Great War Island, or Veliko Ratno Ostrvo, is a hidden natural corner of Belgrade, Serbia, in the Zemun area where the Sava flows into the Danube. The protected wetland has floodplain woods, reed beds and sandy spits, and it supports more than 200 bird species, among them herons, cormorants and migratory ducks, with white-tailed eagles recorded in some seasons. For most of the year it is a calm place where visitors walk quietly, watch birds and picnic.

On the Zemun side, a Lido beach offers a sandy shore, a few cafes and views across the water toward Belgrade Fortress. The island took its name from its role as a military position contested by the Ottoman and Habsburg empires in earlier centuries, and today it is a nature reserve with restrictions on building. Visitors reach it from Zemun Quay on foot along the riverside or by seasonal boat, where a short fare of around 300 RSD may apply and timetables should be checked locally. A visit takes two to three hours, and longer for birdwatchers. Good photo angles are the sandbanks at sunset, the reed beds at dawn and the skyline across the water from the Lido beach. Crowds gather on hot summer weekends near Lido, while the wild areas remain peaceful, and early morning is best for wildlife. Visitors should bring binoculars, insect repellent and water, stay on marked paths, and take all litter away to protect the reserve.
