Toubacouta is a small riverside village at the southern edge of the Sine-Saloum Delta, a complex estuarine environment of mangrove channels, tidal flats, and sandy barrier islands that constitutes one of Senegal's most significant protected landscapes and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The village sits approximately 160 km south of Dakar, reached via the RN1 highway with a turn toward the river near the Karang border crossing. Campement le Baobab occupies a cleared plot on the village edge, close enough to the river bank that pirogue departures can be arranged directly from the property.
The campement is a vernacular structure rather than a formal hotel: a main dining and gathering area open to the air under a thatch roof, a scatter of simple bungalows built from local timber and palm materials, and an open camping ground beneath mature trees. The large baobab tree that gives the property its name stands in the central yard and provides shade through the hottest part of each day — a practical and symbolic centrepiece of the site. The aesthetic is deliberate simplicity. The draw is the delta, not the accommodation.
Accommodation spans camping — guests may bring their own tent or rent locally — and basic bungalows with single or double beds, a fan, and access to shared outdoor toilet and shower facilities. The shower block is maintained to reasonable standards of cleanliness given its rural context. The camp restaurant serves straightforward Senegalese meals: thieboudienne, yassa poulet, and fresh fish caught by local fishermen from the delta channels. Meals are included in some full-board packages; arrangements should be confirmed at the time of booking.
Staff and local guides can organise pirogue excursions into the delta mangroves, guided birdwatching walks (the Sine-Saloum hosts flamingos, great white pelicans, African fish eagles, and numerous Palearctic migratory species during the November to April season), and boat visits to the classified shell-midden islands (amas de coquillages) that represent ancient human occupation of the delta. The campement suits budget travellers, birdwatchers, and those seeking an unmediated encounter with one of West Africa's most biodiverse ecosystems.
