Auberge de Jeunesse de Dakar

The Auberge de Jeunesse de Dakar is the city's established youth hostel, located in the Point E neighbourhood, a mid-city residential district east of Fann University Hospital and roughly equidistant between the Plateau city centre (approximately four kilometres) and the beaches of the Almadies peninsula (approximately five kilometres). Point E is characterised by wide tree-lined streets, local maquis restaurants, and a resident population of university students and young professionals — an environment that aligns naturally with the hostel's demographic and makes it a practical mid-city base.

The hostel provides a combination of dormitory beds and private rooms, accommodating backpackers, solo travellers, volunteers, aid workers, and students on longer stays. Shared bathrooms serve most of the dormitory areas. The communal kitchen is a significant practical feature for guests managing food costs in Dakar, where tourist-facing restaurants can be expensive relative to local alternatives. Locker storage in the dormitory areas protects valuables for those moving between destinations along West African overland routes.

A rooftop terrace functions as the hostel's social hub, particularly during evening hours when Dakar's Atlantic breeze makes outdoor seating considerably more comfortable than the interior. The common room maintains a pinboard of shared traveller resources — current transport information, tour recommendations, hostel contacts for The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau, and traveller notices. The hostel attracts a steady turnover of nationalities reflecting West Africa's overland circuit.

City buses (Dakar Dem Dikk) and shared taxis (cars rapides, clandos) serving Point E connect the hostel to central Dakar, the Almadies beach area, and the main gare routière (long-distance bus station) for onward travel. The hostel participates in the international youth hostel network.
