The historic valley whose palm groves and springs supported the towns of central Najd for centuries.
Wadi Hanifah is a long seasonal valley that runs through the Najd plateau in Saudi Arabia, passing Diriyah on the north-western side of Riyadh and continuing south through the capital. For centuries it was the lifeline of central Arabia, its springs, wells and seasonal floods supporting palm groves, farms and settlements. Ancient Hajr, the early centre of the Yamama region, lay along the valley, and in the eighteenth century the town of Diriyah grew on its banks to become the capital of the first Saudi state, from 1727 until its destruction in 1818. The valley later fed the growth of Riyadh itself. The landscape is a broad limestone channel flanked by cliffs, with date palms, tamarisk and acacia trees along its floor, and agricultural terraces that show how water was managed. Historic mud-brick farmhouses, watchtowers and irrigation features survive in places, and At-Turaif and Bujairi Quarter overlook the valley at Diriyah. In recent decades the wadi has been the subject of an environmental restoration programme that cleaned and re-landscaped sections, with the aim of reducing pollution, restoring habitat and creating public parks and paths. Walking and cycling routes, picnic areas and lookouts have been added, and the valley now serves as a recreational corridor as well as a historic landscape. Visitors can explore the Diriyah section on foot, taking in the palms and the view of the At-Turaif ruins on the ridge above. The site is open at all times and free to enter, though shade is limited and summer heat is strong. Exhibits do not apply, since the wadi is a landscape rather than a museum, but interpretive signs at Diriyah explain its role in the region's settlement and history.
