The Najdi quarter across the wadi from At-Turaif, now a heritage walk with restaurants and lookouts.
Bujairi Quarter is a historic Najdi neighbourhood in Diriyah, on the north-western side of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It lies on the opposite bank of Wadi Hanifah from At-Turaif District, the capital of the first Saudi state, which was founded in 1727 and destroyed in 1818. The quarter was originally a residential and agricultural area connected with the ruling family and the town's elite, and its position on the valley edge gave it access to palm groves and water. Its character is defined by Najdi architecture: mud-brick buildings with thick walls, flat roofs, small apertures and geometric decoration. Today the area has been conserved and redeveloped as a heritage destination, often referred to as Bujairi Terrace. The restored lanes and courtyards now house restaurants, cafes, galleries and shops, built in a style that follows the surrounding historic fabric. The Bujairi Terrace complex includes a series of terraces facing At-Turaif across the wadi, creating one of the best views of the floodlit ruins. A walkway links the quarter with the At-Turaif ticketed area, so many visitors treat the two as a single outing, with the ruins by day and dinner in Bujairi afterwards. The quarter also contains the remains of historic structures that give context to the settlement's agricultural life, along with interpretive signage in Arabic and English. Restoration has been carried out under the Diriyah Gate Development Authority, using traditional methods alongside modern engineering. Unlike At-Turaif, walking the quarter is free, and visitors pay only for the restaurants and shops they use. The area is busiest on evenings and weekends, so dining reservations are advisable. Because Bujairi combines living heritage with commerce, it presents less of a museum experience and more of an atmospheric setting in which to appreciate the architecture of Najd.
