Madinah (Medina) is the second holiest city in Islam and the home of Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet's Mosque. It lies in the Hejaz about 400 km north of Makkah and is the capital of the Al Madinah region. The city is open to all visitors, but non-Muslims may not enter the Prophet's Mosque and its marked precinct. This guide covers the mosque district, Quba, Uhud and the other ziyarah sites, where to stay and eat, and how to get around.
Accommodation overview
Madinah hotels cluster in the Markazia, the central area around Masjid an-Nabawi: Bada'ah and Musab bin Omair Street to the north, Bani Khidrah and Bab Al Salam to the south, and An Naqa and Al Manakhah to the west. Further options sit along Quba Avenue, near the Haramain high-speed rail station at Madinah Gate, and on the Al Jamiah side of the city. Hotel stays in Madinah are open to visitors of any faith holding a valid visa, but the Masjid an-Nabawi precinct is reserved for Muslims, and travellers should confirm current access rules on the official Saudi tourism site (visitsaudi.com) before travelling. Prices are estimates drawn from October 2026 booking-site listings and rise sharply in Ramadan, around Hajj season and in school holidays. Distances are straight-line from the Green Dome using OpenStreetMap coordinates; star classes are shown only where a source lists them, and the Oberoi Madina, which stopped operating on 1 January 2026, is deliberately not listed.

Check rates on Booking.comBooking tips
Get the best deals and avoid common mistakes.
Book early for Ramadan, the weeks before Hajj and school holidays; the hotels closest to the mosque sell out months ahead.
Check the walking route and nearest gate rather than relying on the star rating: some hotels on the plaza edge are a 2 minute walk, while others across the ring road add 10 to 15 minutes.
Confirm whether the rate includes breakfast and a mosque-view room; views cost extra.
Hotels beyond about 1.5 km (Al Suqya, Madinah Gate, Al Jamiah) cost less but need a taxi, ride-hailing or shuttle before each prayer.
Keep the booking confirmation, passport and Saudi visa details on a phone for check-in; Rawdah visit permits are booked separately in the Nusuk app.
Because the mosque precinct is reserved for Muslims, non-Muslim visitors should choose a hotel with an easy route to restaurants, malls and taxis outside the restricted zone.
