Take a taxi to the Al-Manakhah market, one of Madinah's oldest, for Sukkari and Safawi dates, nuts and honey, and to practise bargaining. Finish at Quba, where the Quba dates market near Masjid Fajr is known for mabroom dates and Al-Aliya date farm stands next to Quba Mosque. A cafe stop at the Row Farm branch, about five minutes by car from Quba, gives a palm-lined terrace for Arabic coffee. Typical prices are Ajwa about SAR 40-150 per kg (~$11-40), Sukkari SAR 20-40 (~$5-11) and Safawi SAR 25-50 (~$7-13); quality grade and packaging cause the spread. Ask to taste, buy from the batch sampled, and request sealed, dated boxes for flights. Stalls generally run about 10:00-22:00 and close at prayers.
