Jannat al-Baqi, or Al-Baqi, is the main historic cemetery of Madinah, beside the eastern side of Masjid an-Nabawi. Tradition holds that many companions, members of the Prophet's family and later scholars are buried here, including his son Ibrahim and the jurist Malik ibn Anas. The graves are unmarked by domes: structures built over them in earlier centuries were demolished in the early 19th century and again in the 1920s, and the cemetery today is simple fields of low stones.

Visitors enter in an orderly way at set times, and reports differ on whether women may enter or only view from the outer fence, so arrangements should be confirmed on site. The cemetery lies within the sacred area and is for Muslims only. Visitors are expected to be quiet, to avoid sitting on graves, and to refrain from photography. The Hop-On Hop-Off Green Route passes close to the cemetery, and Al-Baqi is best visited early in the day.
