Casa Marcelino

Casa Marcelino is a family-operated guesthouse in the Pelourinho neighbourhood of São Tomé City, set within a residential quarter approximately 15 minutes' walk from the waterfront and the central market. Pelourinho is one of the older parts of the city, retaining more of its residential character than the commercial streets closer to the bay, and the neighbourhood gives the stay a texture of ordinary São Tomé life that more central properties cannot replicate.

The property operates from a private house that has been extended or adapted to take guests. The number of rooms is small — typically between four and six — which means Marcelino and the family running the house can give personalised attention to each visitor in a way that hotel operations cannot. Rooms are clean and simply furnished with fans, mosquito nets, and beds. Shared bathroom facilities are managed at a basic but functional standard; the limited room count means bathroom queues are not a significant issue.

Home-cooked meals are available on request, prepared using traditional Santomean recipes. Calulu — a slow-cooked stew of smoked fish or meat with dark leafy greens and palm oil — is a regular on the table, alongside grilled fish, rice and beans, fried plantain, and seasonal fruit. Meals are eaten at a shared dining table, which past guests have described as the most authentic part of the stay; the family often joins or is close by, and conversation about island life, local food, and travel logistics happens naturally. For guests travelling solo or without a local contact, this shared format provides a genuine entry point into Santomean daily culture.

WiFi is available, though the connection may be intermittent, as it is across much of the island. Laundry can be done by the household for a small additional charge. The family maintains relationships with trusted local drivers and guides who can take guests to the island's principal sights, including Pico Cão Grande (approximately two hours' drive south), Monte Café plantation, and the volcanic lakes of Lagoa Amélia. Airport pick-up and drop-off can be arranged at competitive rates. Portuguese is the primary household language; some family members have conversational French and basic English.
