Top 10 Photo Spots

The most photogenic locations in Moscow.

1

Red Square and Saint Basil's Cathedral

📸 Sunrise (5-7AM in summer) or blue hourIconic landmark / architecture

The world's most photographed view of Russia: colorful Saint Basil's Cathedral with the Kremlin wall, Lenin's Mausoleum, and GUM department store. At dawn the square is empty and the morning light paints the cathedral's domes in warm colors.

Photo tip: Arrive before 7AM for an empty square in summer. Blue hour (30 min after sunset) gives even more magical results with lights. The square can be closed on public holidays.
2

Sparrow Hills (Vorobyovy Gory) Panorama

📸 Golden hour / 1-2 hours before sunsetCityscape / panorama

Moscow's finest panoramic viewpoint from the Lenin Hills ridge above the Moscow River. Moscow State University's imposing Stalin Gothic tower dominates the foreground with the entire Moscow skyline and Moscow City skyscrapers spreading out behind.

Photo tip: Arrive 1.5 hours before sunset for golden light. A clear day extends views 30-40km. Winter with snow can be extraordinary.
3

Moscow City (Business District) Skyline

📸 Blue hour (30-45 min after sunset) or nightModern architecture / cityscape

Moscow's cluster of futuristic skyscrapers - Federation Tower (374m), OKO Tower (354m), Mercury City Tower, and others - creates one of Europe's most dramatic modern skylines. Best photographed from across the Moscow River or from Zaryadye Park's floating bridge.

Photo tip: The bridge near Kievsky Station gives excellent Moscow City reflections in the river. Zaryadye floating bridge allows both Moscow City and Kremlin in one frame.
4

Bolshoi Theatre

📸 Evening when illuminated (dusk to 11PM)Architecture / theater

The Bolshoi's magnificent neoclassical facade with its iconic bronze quadriga (Apollo's chariot) is most impressive when illuminated at night. The building and Theatre Square (Teatralnaya Ploshchad) offer multiple compositions.

Photo tip: Shoot from Theatre Square slightly to the left of center. Dusk gives good balance between sky and artificial lighting. The fountain in the square adds foreground interest.
5

Komsomolskaya Metro Station

📸 Early morning (6-8AM) when less crowdedArchitecture / interior

Widely considered one of the world's most beautiful metro stations, the Ring Line platform features a breathtaking yellow vaulted ceiling covered in golden mosaic panels depicting Russian military history, elaborate Baroque-style chandeliers, and marble columns.

Photo tip: Visit the Ring Line platform before 8AM when it's relatively quiet. Both Ring Line and Sokolnicheskaya Line versions of this station have different designs worth visiting.
6

Kiyevskaya Ring Line Metro Station

📸 Any time (least crowded midday)Architecture / interior

One of Moscow's most ornate Ring Line stations with stunning mosaic panels along the walls and ceiling depicting scenes of Ukrainian-Russian friendship (historical). White marble columns and Ukrainian folk decorative elements create a distinctive aesthetic.

Photo tip: Both Ring Line and Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya versions of Kiyevskaya have completely different and equally stunning designs - visit both.
7

Novoslobodskaya Metro Station

📸 Any timeArchitecture / interior

The unique Ring Line station with 32 stained-glass panels illuminated from behind, creating a cathedral-like atmosphere. The warm amber and jewel-toned glass panels are unlike any other metro station anywhere in the world.

Photo tip: Wide-angle lens recommended to capture the full ceiling effect. The stained glass is most impressive when your eyes have adjusted from the brighter exterior.
8

GUM Department Store Interior

📸 Morning (10AM-noon) before crowds; winter for Christmas decorationsArchitecture / interior

The magnificent three-arched glass-roofed interior of GUM (1893) is a spectacular architectural photography subject at any time, but becomes truly magical in winter when elaborately decorated for the New Year season with lights and a central fountain of lights.

Photo tip: Buy an ice cream from GUM's famous parlor while shooting the interior - it's an Instagram classic. Come in December for spectacular Christmas decorations.
9

Zaryadye Park Floating Bridge

📸 Golden hour / sunsetCityscape / modern architecture

The unique floating bridge extending over the Moscow River in Zaryadye Park offers dramatic views of both the Kremlin towers and walls (one direction) and Moscow City skyscrapers (other direction). One location for two of Moscow's best photography subjects.

Photo tip: Great spot for both Kremlin and Moscow City shots. Sunset from the bridge is exceptional. The park itself offers multiple vantage points.
10

Novodevichy Convent Reflection

📸 Morning (8-10AM) when water is calmArchitecture / reflection

The elegant white Baroque towers of Novodevichy Convent reflected in the adjacent pond (frozen in winter) make for beautiful architectural photography. The reflection shots are particularly impressive in morning stillness.

Photo tip: Arrive early before wind disturbs the water. From the pond's north bank the full tower reflection is clearest. In winter the frozen pond offers ice and reflection compositions.
