Termas de Chaves

Termas de Chaves is a working thermal spa in the centre of Chaves, the Roman frontier town of Aquae Flaviae in Trás-os-Montes, the high inland corner of northern Portugal near the Spanish border. The springs here have been used continuously since Roman times, and the modern bathhouse on Largo das Termas sits beside the riverside gardens a short walk from the Roman bridge that still carries traffic across the Tâmega. The water rises from the ground far too hot to enter and is cooled to bathing temperature of around 38°C; it is bicarbonated and sodium-rich, and is drunk as well as bathed in, with a fountain in the spa building where visitors take glasses of the mineral water as part of a prescribed cure. The centre operates on a traditional Portuguese thermal model rather than as a luxury day spa: much of its business is medically oriented, with treatment circuits for digestive complaints, rheumatic conditions and respiratory problems, and sulphur inhalation and vapour treatments alongside hydromassage baths and a thermal pool. Staff include hydrotherapy technicians and nursing personnel, and longer cure programmes are supervised by a doctor attached to the spa, with some courses partly reimbursable for Portuguese residents. Facilities are functional and clean rather than plush — tiled treatment rooms, a thermal pool, changing areas — and the atmosphere is quietly clinical, popular with older Portuguese visitors returning year after year. Prices reflect that positioning and are modest by Portuguese standards, with individual treatments typically in the €10–€30 range and multi-day cure packages priced accordingly. The spa operates Monday to Saturday and closes on Sundays, and treatments are booked by appointment at reception; casual walk-in bathing is not the format here. Chaves itself makes an easy base, with its castle keep, thermal fountain in the town centre and a strong local reputation for smoked ham and sausage.
