Serra do Marão Ridge Walk

The Serra do Marão Ridge Walk starts at Alto do Espinho on the EN15 about 20 minutes' drive from Amarante; there is no public transport to the trailhead and no permit is required to hike the loop. The route covers 14 km with 500 m of elevation gain, reaching the 1,415 m summit ridge, and takes most hikers five to six hours, placing it in the moderate category with sustained climbing but no exposed scrambling. The trail surface alternates between rocky mountain path and dirt track through gorse and heather scrubland, almost entirely unshaded above the treeline, and wind at the summit ridge can be strong even on otherwise calm days, so layers are essential. Key landmarks include the communications towers and viewpoint at the Marão summit, from which the Douro valley and, on clear days, the Serra da Estrela range are visible, as well as the old granite shepherd shelters scattered along the ridge. Hikers wanting a shorter outing can turn back at the first summit viewpoint rather than completing the full ridge loop. There are no natural water sources along the exposed ridge itself, so all water must be carried, and the granite shepherd shelters offer only rudimentary protection rather than proper refuges, making early turnaround advisable if weather closes in.
