Lima River Valley Walk (Ponte de Lima)

The Lima River Valley Walk begins at the medieval Ponte de Lima bridge in the town of Ponte de Lima, reachable by a 30-minute bus from Viana do Castelo on the CP bus network for around 3 euros; no permit is required and the trailhead sits in the town center. The route runs 10 km return along a linear riverside path with essentially no elevation change, taking two and a half to three hours at a relaxed pace, making it one of the easiest and most accessible walks in the Norte region. The surface is a mix of paved riverside promenade near town and packed dirt path further out, fully open with occasional tree cover along the riverbank, and there is no exposure or technical difficulty anywhere on the route. Landmarks along the way include the medieval bridge itself, with sections dating to Roman times, the riverside gardens and plane-tree-lined Alameda in Ponte de Lima, and quintas (rural manor estates) visible across the water further along the path. Hikers with less time can turn around at the edge of town where the paved promenade gives way to the dirt path, roughly a third of the way out. Water and food are readily available at cafés in Ponte de Lima at both the start and end of the walk, and given the flat, low-commitment nature of the route, no shelter or refuge is needed along the way.
