Praia de Viana do Castelo (Cabedelo)

Praia de Cabedelo sits across the Lima river estuary from Viana do Castelo in the Norte region of Portugal, reached most memorably by a short ferry crossing that adds a genuine sense of arrival to the beach visit. The sand is fine and golden, stretching along an open, fully wind-exposed shoreline that has made Cabedelo one of the region's premier spots for kite surfing and windsurfing, alongside a reliable wave break for regular surfing. Water clarity is generally good, with a moderate to strong Atlantic swell that suits confident swimmers and water-sports enthusiasts more than young children, though a mellower stretch nearer the ferry landing offers calmer footing. The beach runs for a considerable length, backed by dunes and pine woodland rather than buildings, giving it an open, natural feel despite its proximity to Viana do Castelo's town centre just across the water. Amenities are solid for a beach reached by ferry: lifeguards patrol through summer, several restaurants and a surf school operate near the main access point, showers and parking serve the far bank for those arriving by car via the road bridge, and kite-surfing schools rent gear and run lessons in the estuary's wind corridor. The mix of a historic riverside town on one side and a wide-open surf beach on the other gives Cabedelo an unusual dual character among Norte beaches. The CP train reaches Viana do Castelo in about 1.5 hours from Porto, with a short ferry across the Lima estuary or a 10-minute taxi via the bridge completing the journey to the sand.
