Praia de Moledo

Praia de Moledo lies near Caminha at the mouth of the Minho river in the Norte region of Portugal, close to the Spanish border, where the beach opens onto sweeping views across the estuary toward Galicia. The sand is fine and pale gold, running along a long, open stretch backed by a pine forest that gives shade and shelter from the wind just steps from the sun-exposed sand. Water clarity is generally good, though the beach sits fully exposed to Atlantic swell, with moderate surf and currents shaped by the nearby river mouth, making it more suited to confident swimmers than very young children in the open sections. A small fortified islet, the Forte da Ínsua, sits just offshore and is reachable on foot at low tide, adding a distinctive landmark to the view. The pine-backed dunes host a well-established campsite, which brings a steady stream of camping visitors through the summer alongside day-trippers from Caminha. Amenities include lifeguard patrol in season, beach bars serving drinks and snacks, showers, and the camping ground's own facilities nearby. The Minho river mouth views give Moledo a distinct sense of place compared to the region's more purely Atlantic-facing beaches, with fishing boats and the Spanish coastline visible across the water. The CP train reaches Caminha in about 1 hour 45 minutes from Porto, followed by a taxi or a roughly 2-km walk to the beach, making it one of the more remote but rewarding beaches in the Norte region.
