Praia de Ofir

Praia de Ofir is a broad, open Atlantic beach in Esposende, in the Norte region of Portugal, set within a landscape of tall dunes and umbrella pine forest that gives it a wilder, more scenic backdrop than the urban beaches near Porto. The sand is fine and pale gold, backed by a resort strip of holiday apartments and hotels set discreetly among the pines, while the sea itself runs cool and clear with a moderate to strong Atlantic swell suited to bodyboarding and surfing. The beach stretches for several kilometres along an open, wind-exposed shoreline, with the calmer Cávado river estuary nearby offering an alternative for those wanting sheltered water. Ofir has long been a popular summer resort for Portuguese families, and the beach draws a lively holiday crowd in July and August, thinning out considerably in shoulder months. Amenities are extensive: lifeguards patrol the main stretch, several beach restaurants and bars operate through summer, water sports operators rent kayaks, paddleboards, and surf equipment, and there is a dedicated surf school for lessons. Showers and changing facilities line the main access points, and parking is available near the resort area, though spaces fill quickly at midday in peak season. The beach is roughly 50 minutes from Porto by car via the A28 motorway, and Rede Expressos buses also connect from Porto to nearby Esposende. The combination of pine-backed dunes, resort infrastructure, and a genuine surf scene makes Ofir one of the more complete beach destinations on this stretch of coast.
