Jardim do Palácio de Cristal (Crystal Palace Gardens)

Jardim do Palácio de Cristal occupies a hilltop site in Porto once home to a 19th-century glass-and-iron Crystal Palace, replaced today by the domed Pavilhão Rosa Mota sports arena, with the surrounding terraced gardens remaining from the original 1865 landscape design by the German horticulturalist Émile David. Visitors wander sloped lawns and gravel paths past ponds, a rosarium and a notable camellia collection, while free-roaming peacocks add a distinctive touch across the grounds. Several belvedere viewpoints along the western edge of the park open onto views over the Douro river and the Arrábida bridge in the distance, among the best panoramic outlooks in the city outside the historic centre. A walk through the gardens and viewpoints takes 1 to 1.5 hours, and the park's benches and open lawns make it an easy spot for a picnic. Morning or late afternoon light suits photography best, coinciding with when the peacocks tend to be most active and visible across the lawns.
