Torre dos Clérigos

Torre dos Clérigos is a Baroque bell tower completed in 1763 to designs by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, rising 76 metres above central Porto and forming one of the city's defining landmarks. Visitors climb a narrow spiral staircase of 240 steps, passing small window openings that offer glimpses over the rooftops before reaching the viewing platform at the top, which delivers a 360-degree panorama over Porto's terracotta roofs, the Douro river and Vila Nova de Gaia beyond. The tower adjoins the Clérigos Church, also by Nasoni, whose gilded Baroque interior can be visited on the same ticket along with a small museum on the tower's construction and Porto's granite-working heritage. A full visit, including the climb, time on the platform and the church below, takes 45 to 60 minutes. Because the staircase is narrow and used for two-way traffic, brief waits are common near the top during busy periods, and the climb itself is strenuous enough that visitors with heart or breathing conditions should consider it carefully. Late afternoon offers the softest light for photographs from the platform, with the sun lowering over the river and the Ribeira district glowing gold. The tower sits directly beside Rua das Carmelitas, within easy walking distance of Livraria Lello and the Trindade metro station, making it a natural stop on a walking route through Porto's downtown core.
