Casa da Música, designed by Rem Koolhaas and opened in 2005, is an angular white concrete concert hall in Porto's Boavista district and one of the city's defining works of contemporary architecture. Visitors can join a guided architecture tour through the building's asymmetric public spaces and backstage areas, including the VIP room lined with traditional blue-and-white azulejo tiles set against the otherwise stark modern interior, or attend an evening performance by the resident Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto or visiting acts spanning classical, jazz and contemporary programming. The main auditorium, wrapped in corrugated glass that floods it with daylight during the day, is the architectural centrepiece, while a rooftop terrace offers wider views over the surrounding Boavista neighbourhood. A guided tour takes about an hour, and attending a concert typically adds another one to two hours depending on the programme. Evening concerts are widely considered the best way to experience the building, since the acoustics and lighting design are built around live performance, though daytime tours offer a quieter, more detailed look at the architecture itself. Well-known Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto programmes can sell out in advance, so booking ahead is worthwhile for a specific performance, while the fixed daily tour schedule requires advance reservation as well.
