Foz do Douro & Atlantic Promenade

Foz do Douro is the seafront neighbourhood where the Douro river meets the Atlantic on Porto's western edge, anchored by the Farol de Felgueiras lighthouse at the river mouth and a long oceanfront promenade running toward Matosinhos. Visitors walk or cycle the paved seafront path past Praia da Memória's rocky coastline and tidal pools, with upscale cafés and seafood restaurants lining Avenida do Brasil for those wanting a longer stop. The promenade is popular with local joggers, cyclists and families year-round, giving the neighbourhood a more residential, less touristy feel than the Ribeira district closer to the city centre. A visit walking or cycling the promenade takes one to two hours, longer with a meal at one of the seafood restaurants. Sunset is the busiest and most scenic time along the seafront, when the Atlantic horizon catches the evening light, though the promenade sees steady local use throughout the day regardless of season. The tram Line 1 connects directly from Ribeira to the Foz waterfront, making it an easy extension to a riverside walking day, and wind along the exposed coastline can be strong even in summer, so a light jacket is worth carrying.
