Blandy's Wine Lodge

Blandy's Wine Lodge, on Avenida Arriaga in central Funchal, is the retail and visitor centre of one of Madeira's oldest wine houses, founded in the early 19th century, and combines a working cellar with a shop dedicated entirely to fortified Madeira wine rather than general souvenirs. The shop stocks the full range of styles produced on the island, from younger, drier Sercial and Verdelho bottlings to sweeter, longer-aged Bual and Malmsey, along with rare vintage and colheita bottlings not typically found in supermarkets or airport shops, giving visitors access to a depth of selection well beyond generic tourist wine racks. Guided cellar tours pass through the historic wooden storage rooms where barrels age using the traditional canteiro method, and tastings, either included in a tour or purchased separately, let visitors sample several styles before buying, which helps distinguish genuine interest from casual souvenir purchasing. Prices span from a modest bottle of standard-aged wine to several hundred euros for rare vintage releases, and pricing is fixed rather than negotiable, consistent with wine retail elsewhere in Portugal.
