Praia dos Reis Magos

Praia dos Reis Magos is a dark volcanic-pebble beach in Caniço de Baixo, a low-key seaside resort area about 12km east of Funchal. The beach is compact and pebbled rather than sandy, typical of much of Madeira's natural south-coast shoreline, with clear water that owes its transparency partly to the rocky reef just offshore rather than any imported sand. The bay is moderately sheltered, giving reasonably calm conditions for swimming, and its clarity has made it one of the better spots on the south coast for snorkelling and scuba diving, with a diving centre operating nearby. The atmosphere is relaxed and residential rather than built around large hotels, drawing a mix of local families, divers and visitors staying in Caniço de Baixo's smaller apartment complexes and guesthouses rather than big resort crowds. Amenities include beach bars, sunbed rental, showers and parking, though the facilities are more modest than at Praia Formosa or Calheta, reflecting the area's quieter, less commercial character. There is no lifeguard cover confirmed at this beach, so swimmers should be attentive to conditions themselves. The pebbled surface makes water shoes worthwhile, and the underwater visibility that attracts divers also rewards snorkellers exploring the rocky reef close to shore. Getting there from Funchal involves either the Horários do Funchal or SAM bus toward Caniço, or a short rental car drive along the coastal road, with the trip taking roughly 20 to 30 minutes. The proximity of the diving centre means the beach sees a steady trickle of divers gearing up and returning from dives throughout the day, giving it a slightly more active, activity-focused feel than a typical sunbathing beach.
