Machico Beach

Machico Beach sits at the head of Machico bay on Madeira's east coast, about 25km from Funchal, in the historic town where Madeira's first Portuguese settlers are traditionally said to have landed in the 15th century. Like Calheta, the beach uses imported sand over a protected, breakwater-sheltered bay, giving it a calm, shallow swimming area that contrasts with the island's natural pebble coastline. The bay is broad and open rather than a tight cove, backed by the town of Machico with its harbour, a small fort and old-town streets running just behind the seafront. Because Machico is close to Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport, the beach has a practical, low-key character rather than a resort-strip feel, popular with local families, arriving or departing travellers with a few spare hours, and visitors based in the town rather than a party crowd. Amenities include beach bars, restaurants, sunbed rental, showers and lifeguard cover during the summer season, all concentrated along the town-facing promenade. The calm, sheltered water is generally safe for swimming and suited to children, and the harbour and fort add a historic backdrop uncommon among Madeira's other beaches. Parking is available near the seafront, and the SAM intercity bus connects Machico to Funchal and the airport, making the beach easy to combine with an arrival or departure day; the drive from Funchal takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes via the coastal roads. The old town's restaurants and cafes, just a short walk from the sand, add options beyond the beachfront bars, and the setting feels distinctly local rather than built around tourism infrastructure, giving visitors a more everyday sense of Madeiran coastal life alongside the swimming.
