Solar do Castelo

Solar do Castelo is a small luxury hotel built within the walls of Castelo de São Jorge, Lisbon's hilltop medieval fortress and the city's most recognisable landmark. The property occupies an 18th-century manor house — the solar — standing on the site of the royal kitchens of the original Moorish palace, inside the castle's inner bailey. Guests enter through the castle gates, passing orange trees and peacocks in the outer grounds before reaching the hotel's private walled garden.

The hotel has 14 rooms and suites arranged across the original manor building. Classic and Superior rooms are compact but refined, featuring stone walls, period-influenced furnishings, and framed antique maps of Lisbon. The garden suite opens directly onto the private walled garden, where a fountain and mature orange trees create a setting of unusual tranquillity for a property at the centre of one of Europe's most-visited tourist attractions. All rooms have air conditioning and free WiFi.

The hotel is part of the Heritage Hotels of Portugal group, known for sensitive conversions of historic Portuguese properties. The restoration preserved the manor's original proportions and materials while introducing discreet contemporary comforts. There is no swimming pool or full-service restaurant on site, but the private garden serves breakfast in the mornings, and Alfama's tascas are a short walk downhill.

The guest experience is defined by the setting: dawn and dusk walks in the castle grounds before or after tourist crowds, stargazing from the battlements, and the fact of sleeping inside a fortress that has stood since the 11th century. Tram 28 — one of Lisbon's most scenic heritage tram routes — stops at the castle gates.
