Praia do Camilo

Praia do Camilo is a tiny, intimate cove on the southern outskirts of Lagos in the Algarve, Portugal, enclosed by the same dramatic orange and ochre sandstone cliff system that characterises the western Algarve coastline between Lagos and Sagres. The beach is accessed by descending a wooden staircase of approximately 200 steps that switchback through a narrow cleft in the cliffs from a small clifftop car park, emerging onto a pocket of pale golden sand perhaps 60 metres across and 30 metres deep at low tide. At high tide the sand largely disappears, leaving a narrow strip at the cliff base. The water is a vivid turquoise, exceptionally clear, and flanked by natural rock formations including arches, sea stacks, and small sea caves that create a sense of theatrical enclosure. The cove faces south-southwest, receiving sun throughout the day except in the early morning when the eastern cliff casts a shadow. Conditions are generally calm compared to exposed Atlantic beaches, though northerly swell can push through the gap between the cliff promontories and create modest surf. Snorkelling around the rock formations is highly rewarding; water clarity is excellent and marine life includes wrasse, bream, sea urchins, and occasional octopus. There are no facilities on the beach itself — no bar, no toilets, no sunbed hire — making the experience more rugged than nearby Praia Dona Ana. Lagos town centre lies approximately 1.5 kilometres north along the cliff path or by road, with the full range of restaurants, bars, and accommodation. The Ponta da Piedade rock formations and lighthouse, one of the Algarve's most celebrated viewpoints, are a 15-minute walk south from the car park along the clifftop path. The beach receives high visitor numbers in July and August, particularly on afternoons; the staircase access limits throughput but the small size means it reaches capacity quickly.
