Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha sits within the Algarve municipality of Lagoa, carved into one of the most dramatic stretches of Portugal's southern coastline. The beach occupies a small sheltered cove framed by towering golden and ochre limestone cliffs pocked with arches, sea stacks, and sea caves worn smooth by Atlantic swells over millennia. The sand is fine, pale gold, and compact at low tide, giving way to crystalline turquoise water of exceptional clarity — underwater visibility can exceed ten metres on calm days, making this one of the finest natural snorkelling sites on the Portuguese coast. The cove faces roughly south, providing some shelter from the prevailing westerly winds, though northerly swells can still push modest surf to the shoreline. The beach spans roughly 200 metres across and is bounded on all sides by the limestone cliff formations that make it so visually distinctive. A wooden staircase of approximately 200 steps descends from the clifftop car park to the sand; there is no alternative flat-access route. A small beach bar operates during the summer season, serving drinks and light snacks, and kayak and snorkelling equipment can be rented from seasonal operators at the base of the steps. Lifeguard coverage runs from June through September. The surrounding cliffs host the Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos, the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, which connects Praia da Marinha to a series of nearby coves and viewpoints along the Algarve coast. The village of Lagoa lies approximately six kilometres inland, with the resort town of Carvoeiro about four kilometres to the west offering a wider range of hotels, restaurants, and services. Parking at the clifftop is free but fills quickly from mid-morning throughout July and August; arriving before 09:00 is advisable. Public buses from Lagoa and Carvoeiro serve the main access road in summer, though the stop requires a short walk from the cliff edge.
