Praia de Benagil

Praia de Benagil is a tiny beach nestled at the foot of a narrow valley where the small fishing village of Benagil meets the Atlantic in the municipality of Lagoa, Algarve, Portugal. The beach itself is compact — little more than 50 metres of pale sand framed by high limestone cliffs — and serves primarily as the departure point for visiting the Algar de Benagil, the spectacular sea cave whose natural domed skylight has made it one of Portugal's most photographed natural landmarks. The cave lies just around the western headland; it cannot be reached on foot and is accessible only by kayak, SUP board, or small boat when sea conditions permit. The cave's interior houses a small sand floor at low tide, illuminated from above through a circular ceiling opening roughly eight metres across, producing extraordinary light effects that peak around midday. The main beach faces south-southwest and is exposed to Atlantic swells, making swimming conditions variable. Modest surf breaks near the cliff walls and rip currents can form at the base of the rocks. Lifeguards are present during the summer season. The beach has no shade structures, but a small seafood restaurant perches at the top of the access ramp serving grilled fish, cold drinks, and regional dishes — one of the more authentic dining experiences in this heavily touristed stretch of the Algarve. Kayak and SUP rental operators set up on the beach from June, and numerous boat tour companies depart from Carvoeiro and Portimão with cave excursions as their headline attraction. Parking in the village is extremely limited — a small clifftop car park fills before 09:00 in peak season. The nearest sizeable town is Lagoa, roughly eight kilometres north. Visitors arriving without their own kayak should book a cave tour in advance in July and August, as same-day places are rarely available.
