Pico Alto Trail, Santa Maria

The trail starts near Santo Espírito, reached by car from Vila do Porto or the village itself; there is no scheduled bus to the trailhead and no permit is required. The out-and-back route covers 5 km with about 200 m of cumulative elevation gain, rated easy, climbing to the summit of Pico Alto, Santa Maria's highest point at 587 m. The path is a mix of packed dirt track and a paved access road used by maintenance vehicles for the summit installations, with limited shade throughout and moderate exposure to wind near the top, though the trail itself stays on established tracks rather than cliff edges. Landmarks include former radar and military installations near the summit, now partly decommissioned, and sweeping views over Santa Maria's patchwork of small farm fields, stone walls, and the surrounding Atlantic. On a clear day, views can extend toward the neighbouring islet of Vila do Porto's coastline and, occasionally, hazily toward São Miguel. A shorter turn-around point exists partway up at a lower viewpoint for those not wanting the full ascent. There are no refuge huts or water sources on the trail, though the short distance means most hikers carry only a litre. Santa Maria's drier, more Mediterranean-like climate compared to the other Azorean islands makes Pico Alto a reliably walkable trail across more of the year than the wetter central and western islands.
