Sete Cidades Twin Crater Lakes

An early-morning departure, ideally before 9am, gives the best chance of catching the crater rim before cloud rolls in, since the volcanic caldera sits at altitude and fog is common by midday. The classic itinerary starts at the Vista do Rei viewpoint on the crater's southern rim, where the postcard panorama takes in both the green Lagoa Verde and the blue Lagoa Azul lakes divided by a narrow land bridge. From there, the road descends into the caldera to the village of Sete Cidades itself, a scattering of farmhouses and a small parish church set directly between the two lakes, where visitors can walk the causeway and get a lakeside view rather than the elevated one. Hydrangea hedges line the crater roads and the causeway from roughly May through September, when they bloom in shades of blue and pink and make the drive itself part of the appeal. A short walk around Lagoa Azul's shoreline or a longer hike along part of the crater rim trail, from Vista do Rei to Miradouro do Cerrado das Freiras, suits an afternoon for those wanting more exercise, roughly 2-3 hours at an easy pace. Rest and food stops are limited inside the caldera itself; the village of Sete Cidades has a handful of small cafés and a restaurant near the lakeshore serving simple Azorean fare such as soup and grilled fish, while Ponta Delgada offers a fuller range of restaurants for an early lunch before departure or dinner on return. Combining the viewpoint in the morning with the village and lakeshore in early afternoon, then heading back to Ponta Delgada before evening, makes for a comfortable full loop without needing an overnight stay. May through September offers the clearest skies and the hydrangea bloom, though the crater lakes are accessible year-round for those willing to risk cloud cover.
