Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo Boat Trip

The islet lies just offshore from Vila Franca do Campo, about 20 km southeast of Ponta Delgada and a 25-30 minute drive along the coastal road, followed by a 10-15 minute boat crossing from the town marina. Because access to the crater lagoon is seasonal and boat operators run on limited schedules, a morning departure, ideally the first sailing of the day, gives the best chance of calm water and fewer crowds inside the flooded caldera. Once ashore or moored at the islet, the enclosed lagoon formed by the collapsed volcanic crater offers sheltered swimming and snorkeling in clear water, with a narrow rocky opening to the ocean on one side; the surrounding cliffs and ledges are a nesting site for seabirds, which is why access is restricted to the June-September season and daily visitor numbers are capped. A morning swim inside the crater, followed by snorkeling along its rim, fills two to three hours before boats return groups to the marina for lunch. Vila Franca do Campo itself has a walkable seafront promenade and a handful of restaurants and cafés serving fresh fish and the town's traditional queijadas pastry, making it a natural stop for a late lunch after the boat trip. Visitors who prefer more activity can join a kayak tour instead of a motorboat, paddling out to the islet under their own power before swimming inside the lagoon. Because the crossing depends on sea conditions and the protected-species access window, this excursion works only from June through September; outside those months the islet remains visible from the coastal miradouros above Vila Franca do Campo but cannot be reached by boat.
