Faro Old Town (Cidade Velha)

The Cidade Velha, Faro's walled medieval old town in the eastern Algarve, offers tight, atmospheric compositions along its narrow cobbled lanes and the open cathedral square framed by the Sé Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace. The strongest frame at the Arco da Vila gateway looks inward through the arch into the old town, using the stonework as a natural frame, while the cathedral square works best as a wide shot including the orange trees, storks' nests on the cathedral tower, and the whitewashed facades. Morning light, roughly 7:30AM to 9:30AM, is softest here, since the low sun grazes the white walls at an angle without the harsh contrast of midday and the narrow streets are still partly shaded, giving even, diffused illumination across the pale stone. By late morning the sun sits high over the square and produces stark white highlights and deep shadows. The old town is very quiet before 8:30AM, well before tour groups and the daily influx from cruise visits arrive; by mid-morning the square and lanes fill considerably. The Cidade Velha is a free, open public quarter of the city with no entrance fee, and tripods are generally tolerated on the quieter lanes and square, though users should stay clear of church services and give way to residents.
