Algarve Photography Guide 2025
Capture stunning photos with our guide to the best photography spots in Algarve.
The Algarve is Portugal's southernmost district, renowned for its dramatic golden limestone cliffs, over 150 pristine beaches, and more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Stretching 155 kilometres along the Atlantic coast, this sun-drenched region blends spectacular natural scenery with charming whitewashed villages, Moorish heritage, world-class golf, and a vibrant seafood cuisine.
Top 10 Photo Spots
The most photogenic locations in Algarve.
Ponta da Piedade
The golden limestone sea stacks and arches south of Lagos are extraordinary in the warm afternoon light, turning deep amber and orange as the sun descends towards the Atlantic. The clifftop viewpoints offer dramatic composition possibilities.
Benagil Sea Cave Interior
The inside of the Benagil Sea Cave is one of the most photographed natural interiors in Europe — a cathedral-like chamber with a circular skylight opening. The sunlight beam through the hole peaks mid-morning.
Praia da Falésia at Sunset
The vivid red-and-orange sandstone cliffs above Praia da Falésia glow dramatically at sunset, creating extraordinary colour contrast with the blue sea below. The 6km beach allows many different compositions.
Sagres Fortress at Sunrise
The vast clifftop fortification of Sagres is extraordinary at dawn with golden light on the ancient walls and the Atlantic stretching to infinity. Few visitors are present this early.
Silves Castle at Dusk
The red sandstone battlements of Silves Castle are illuminated at night and glow warmly against the deep blue post-sunset sky. The view from across the river on the opposite hillside is classic.
Ria Formosa Lagoon at Dawn
The still waters of the Ria Formosa lagoon mirror a spectacular sunrise when the skies are clear, with flamingos and wading birds silhouetted against the glowing horizon. The boardwalk near Olhão offers the best access.
Faro Old Town (Cidade Velha)
The medieval walled city of Faro has beautiful early morning light on its whitewashed buildings, the Arco da Vila gateway, and the cathedral square before tourist crowds arrive.
Cape St. Vincent at Sunset
Continental Europe's southwestern tip draws crowds for its legendary sunsets — the sun appears to sink directly into the Atlantic from this vantage point. The lighthouse and cliff edge create dramatic silhouettes.
Carvoeiro Village from the Clifftops
The view looking down from the clifftops above Carvoeiro at the pastel-coloured village nestled in a cove is one of the most charming village compositions in the Algarve.
Loulé Market Interior
The neo-Moorish interior of Loulé's covered market, with its ornate arched ceiling and stalls piled with colourful produce, is a magnificent photography subject. Saturday morning is the most vibrant.

Photography Tips
Get better shots in Algarve.
A polarising filter dramatically improves ocean and rock pool photography by cutting glare and deepening the blue of the water
The Algarve's limestone cliffs photograph best in low angle light (morning or evening) — midday sun washes out the amber and orange tones
For Benagil Cave, shoot in RAW format to handle the extreme contrast between the bright oculus light and the shadowy cave interior
Drone photography: recreational drones under 250g require registration; larger drones need permits near airports (within 8km of Faro Airport — covers much of the region). Check ANAC (Portuguese aviation authority) regulations before flying.
The best sunset colours on Ponta da Piedade appear 10–15 minutes after the sun dips below the horizon — don't pack away too early
For market photography, always ask vendors before photographing people at close range — a smile and 'posso tirar uma foto?' (can I take a photo?) goes a long way
Photography Etiquette
Respect local customs while capturing memories.
Always ask permission before photographing people, especially women. Offer to show them the photo.
Never photograph military installations, government buildings, airports, or security checkpoints.
Some religious sites prohibit photography or require fees. Always check before shooting.
Be discrete with expensive camera gear in crowded areas. Don't obstruct traffic or pathways for photos.
