Algarve Photography Guide 2025

Capture stunning photos with our guide to the best photography spots in Algarve.

The Algarve is Portugal's southernmost district, renowned for its dramatic golden limestone cliffs, over 150 pristine beaches, and more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Stretching 155 kilometres along the Atlantic coast, this sun-drenched region blends spectacular natural scenery with charming whitewashed villages, Moorish heritage, world-class golf, and a vibrant seafood cuisine.

Top 10 Photo Spots

The most photogenic locations in Algarve.

1

Ponta da Piedade

📸 late afternoon / golden hourcoastal landscape

The golden limestone sea stacks and arches south of Lagos are extraordinary in the warm afternoon light, turning deep amber and orange as the sun descends towards the Atlantic. The clifftop viewpoints offer dramatic composition possibilities.

Photo tip: Arrive 1.5 hours before sunset. Shoot from the lighthouse viewpoint first, then descend the steps to the lower platforms for close-up arch shots.
2

Benagil Sea Cave Interior

📸 9AM–11AM (sunlight through the oculus)cave / nature

The inside of the Benagil Sea Cave is one of the most photographed natural interiors in Europe — a cathedral-like chamber with a circular skylight opening. The sunlight beam through the hole peaks mid-morning.

Photo tip: Take a kayak tour for more photography time inside the cave than a standard boat tour allows. A wide-angle lens captures the full dome.
3

Praia da Falésia at Sunset

📸 sunsetbeach / cliffs

The vivid red-and-orange sandstone cliffs above Praia da Falésia glow dramatically at sunset, creating extraordinary colour contrast with the blue sea below. The 6km beach allows many different compositions.

Photo tip: Position yourself at the cliff edge looking west for silhouettes of figures on the beach with coloured cliffs behind. The Olhos de Água access point has good parking for late arrivals.
4

Sagres Fortress at Sunrise

📸 sunriselandmark / coastal

The vast clifftop fortification of Sagres is extraordinary at dawn with golden light on the ancient walls and the Atlantic stretching to infinity. Few visitors are present this early.

Photo tip: Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise. The giant wind rose (rosa dos ventos) inside the fortress makes a distinctive geometric composition.
5

Silves Castle at Dusk

📸 blue hour (30 min after sunset)castle / architecture

The red sandstone battlements of Silves Castle are illuminated at night and glow warmly against the deep blue post-sunset sky. The view from across the river on the opposite hillside is classic.

Photo tip: Cross the bridge south of Silves and walk up the opposite hill for the best full-castle composition with orange groves in the foreground.
6

Ria Formosa Lagoon at Dawn

📸 sunrisewildlife / landscape

The still waters of the Ria Formosa lagoon mirror a spectacular sunrise when the skies are clear, with flamingos and wading birds silhouetted against the glowing horizon. The boardwalk near Olhão offers the best access.

Photo tip: Photograph from the Quinta de Marim environmental centre trails, which run directly through the lagoon landscape. A telephoto lens (200–400mm) is needed for flamingo shots.
7

Faro Old Town (Cidade Velha)

📸 morning (soft light on white walls)urban / architecture

The medieval walled city of Faro has beautiful early morning light on its whitewashed buildings, the Arco da Vila gateway, and the cathedral square before tourist crowds arrive.

Photo tip: Enter through the Arco da Vila at 8AM when the light is soft and the lanes are quiet. The cathedral square and the bishop's palace façade are excellent subjects.
8

Cape St. Vincent at Sunset

📸 sunsetcoastal / landscape

Continental Europe's southwestern tip draws crowds for its legendary sunsets — the sun appears to sink directly into the Atlantic from this vantage point. The lighthouse and cliff edge create dramatic silhouettes.

Photo tip: Arrive 45 minutes early to secure a good position. Shoot both wide (lighthouse + horizon) and telephoto (sun disc near horizon). The rocky cliffs on the north side of the cape are less crowded.
9

Carvoeiro Village from the Clifftops

📸 afternoonvillage / coastal

The view looking down from the clifftops above Carvoeiro at the pastel-coloured village nestled in a cove is one of the most charming village compositions in the Algarve.

Photo tip: Take the Algar Seco boardwalk east of the village for elevated views back over Carvoeiro beach. The beach itself photographs beautifully from the western cliffs.
10

Loulé Market Interior

📸 early morning (7–9AM)market / street

The neo-Moorish interior of Loulé's covered market, with its ornate arched ceiling and stalls piled with colourful produce, is a magnificent photography subject. Saturday morning is the most vibrant.

Photo tip: Photograph vendors and stall arrangements early before the market fills. Ask permission before photographing vendors at close range.

Photography Tips

Get better shots in Algarve.

📸

A polarising filter dramatically improves ocean and rock pool photography by cutting glare and deepening the blue of the water

📸

The Algarve's limestone cliffs photograph best in low angle light (morning or evening) — midday sun washes out the amber and orange tones

📸

For Benagil Cave, shoot in RAW format to handle the extreme contrast between the bright oculus light and the shadowy cave interior

📸

Drone photography: recreational drones under 250g require registration; larger drones need permits near airports (within 8km of Faro Airport — covers much of the region). Check ANAC (Portuguese aviation authority) regulations before flying.

📸

The best sunset colours on Ponta da Piedade appear 10–15 minutes after the sun dips below the horizon — don't pack away too early

📸

For market photography, always ask vendors before photographing people at close range — a smile and 'posso tirar uma foto?' (can I take a photo?) goes a long way

Photography Etiquette

Respect local customs while capturing memories.

IMPORTANT

Always ask permission before photographing people, especially women. Offer to show them the photo.

RESTRICTED

Never photograph military installations, government buildings, airports, or security checkpoints.

RESPECT

Some religious sites prohibit photography or require fees. Always check before shooting.

CONSIDERATE

Be discrete with expensive camera gear in crowded areas. Don't obstruct traffic or pathways for photos.
