Seville sits 220km from Faro, across the Portugal-Spain border in Andalusia, reached in about 2.5 hours by car via the A22 and A49 motorways or roughly 3 hours by the Alsa bus, which runs directly from Faro for around €30 return. A car offers more flexibility, but the bus removes the stress of city-centre parking and border-crossing logistics. Because of the distance, an early departure — ideally by 7:30am — is essential to make the most of the day. Mornings are best reserved for the Real Alcázar, the Mudéjar royal palace with elaborate tiled courtyards and sprawling gardens, followed by the Catedral de Sevilla next door, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, and a climb up La Giralda, its Moorish-era bell tower, for rooftop views over the city. Both sites draw long queues, so pre-booked timed tickets are strongly advised. The afternoon suits wandering the Barrio Santa Cruz, the old Jewish quarter's tangle of narrow whitewashed streets lined with tapas bars, followed by a stop at the grand Plaza de España with its tiled alcoves and canal. Travellers with extra time can cross the river to the Mercado de Triana for local produce and ceramics before the drive or bus back. Spring (March–May) offers the most comfortable sightseeing temperatures, since Seville's summer heat regularly exceeds 38°C and makes an all-day walking itinerary uncomfortable. Lunch is best taken in Santa Cruz's tapas bars between the morning and afternoon sights, allowing a break from the midday sun.
